    Quent/Rich:
Thanks for the info. I became “intimate” with the cooling system on Lady Leanne after throwing a belt. After an 8 knot sail with one reef, it was an exciting short tack back through the reef cut to my dock with no power. The crap cooked loose and it looked like Campbell’s soup in there (just bought the boat and hadn’t checked the cooling system yet). There is a sticker on the heat exchanger that says “check zinc monthly”. It was still functional, but I will attend to it religiously.

I will also check out the end bolts. How do you clean out the tubes? Do you just push wads through there like a rifle?

I also have a Hunter 33.5 with a Yanmar back in our home base of Atlanta….no engine zincs here either, so I’m learning new stuff daily!

Being one that enjoys arcane marine flag etiquette (flying one’s own pennant on the mizzen would be a pleasure enjoyed by few), how exactly is a pigstick attached so that a vertical mount can be attained?

I would also like to get a copy (especially wiring) and would be happy to chip in.

    Aloha Eric:

Great to hear that you will be going to HI. We recently bought our 424 ketch there and lie at Keehi marina. I have to admit it may be hard to bareboat charter there without a captain. You really have to know bluewater and the area to go it alone. As a result, there is a dearth of bareboat opportunities. You will probably have more luck with a crewed charter. Unfortunately, I’ll be leaving Oahu in January or else I would be glad to take you out for a day sail.

If you are a member of a reciprocating yacht club, you may want to hang out at the Waikiki Yacht Club or the Hawai’i Yacht Club on the other side of Ali Wai marina (lovingly referred to as the “Dark Side” by the WYC folks…we are WYC members). Both are in Waikiki. Ask around at the bar and someone might need crew. Note that it may be possible to walk in as a “prospective member” and get a guest card for a day

There are always the sundowner booze cruises from the hotel on Waikiki if nothing else. Let me know if I can help you further.

Thanks for the input. I’ll investigate mixer fittings further to see what works. The idea of a bar for the shower head is a great idea. So is a light.

I noticed the locker door in your head picture. Is there much room back in there?

    Thanks

    Thanks for your response.

After much digging, I have found an English company that still sells spares for this windless. Google “Simpson Lawrence Sea Tiger spares” and you will find it. Being rash, I went ahead and purchased a stainless handle for $110. Now I get to see if the windless actually works (I just bought the boat and am running through all of the systems).

I’ve never owned a manual windless before, so I’m looking forward to understanding this puzzlement. I believe I will stick to the KISS principle with a manual unit as service and parts for power options are not easy to find outside of Oahu. Shipping is also forever and pricey.

Are these units easy to rebuild? I have the original pamphlet for it and it doesn’t look look too complicated.

    Thanks

The prop that I want to replace on our yacht is an 18 LH 12, on a 1.5″ shaft. Could this be the original?

Rich: Thanks for the input on the vent tubes. I will add their cleanliness to my chore sheet. I must say, if we ever have a frost in here, maybe I’ll be the one to burst.

good advise to check the vent tube. If dirt/leaves clog the thing and it freezes over the winter, it can burst. I’ve had this happen at least two times.

    Dan-
We own Clairebuoyant #132. We replaced the original stove with a 3 burner Force 10. It sticks out a couple inches further, but is a substantial improvement. The two burner F-10 would fit a bit better.
We had to shim the gimbel mounts, and move the stainless steel bar in front a bit, nothing major.
I’d also revisit the propane delivery system. For some reason ours had two solinoid valves, one at the tank, and one at the galley. The copper tubing was getting a bit long in the tooth. We replaced it all with a preassembled propane hose, and also replaced the regulator as well. We now have one solinoid valve in the tank locker, and unbroken hose line to the stove.
Also check the copper drain line from the bottom of the tank locker to the transom drain. At least two boats, including mine have had this line corrode through, opening the interior of the boat to propane vapor. You will have to remove some plywood to trace this line all the way through, but it fails where you can’t see it easily.
Finally, in the port cockpit locker, forward there is a spot where the propane line, electric lines and the bolts on the lifeline stanchion base are close together. Check here for corrosion on the propane line and chafe on the wiring.
    Hope this helps.

    Aloha Quent:

Thanks for your input. A 3 burner would be our first choice. Looking at West’s catalog, they have a 3 burner model (#63354) that is 19 3/4″ deep and looks like the smallest one they sell. The depth of the countertop that I measured on our boat is 19″ deep. Is this the one you installed?

I also want to replace all fittings and tanks on board. My motto is “do it right the first time”. Thanks for these tidbits.

Thanks for the insight. It sounds like it would be an easier job to remove the countertop and then replace the material. Corian sounds like a good move.

Thanks for the reassuring backup info. The 1980 424’s hull number is 135. I will do the engine oil analysis and also contact Westerbeke to find out if the engine is original.
