KeymasterYep. I know the feeling. Doesn’t quite drain right.
Incidentally, this message wasn’t transmitted correctly – it basically forwarded all the images, not yours.
Working on it.

KeymasterCharlie,The way it works is that you can subscribe to one or more (or none!) of three forums. Whenever anyone sends an email to the forum, or posts to it directly on the website, an email is sent to everyone who has subscribed. When they respond, either on the web, or by email, it’s posted to the web, and sent around to everyone who is subscribed. That way the conversations stay available in one place – the website, for non-subscribers to search and review. At least this is the way it works now! We might investigate making an email digest later, but right now this is what we(finally) have.EwanSent from Outlook Mobile___

KeymasterRoger,
Great idea – I have a locker full of W58 spares I have yet to dispose of. When I get back to my boat on the 23rd I will make sure i list them – will a Google Doc work for everyone?

KeymasterI will look into adding the thread link into the footer, so you can immediately go to the thread on the web. Would that help?Ewan___

KeymasterAll,
Quick update on the site:
– we’re still working through this formatting issue. I know our engineer in India is tearing his hair out with it, so work proceeds accordingly.
– we’re working on the issue where we’ll be able to add attachments to our emails, and where emails posted to the site will show up in emails.
– we’ve increased the email limit for our site to 1500 an hour, which means we can have a rather vibrant community. We were previously constrained because we only had 300 emails an hour.
– we still have a punch list of annoyances to deal with, including sorting out intermittent drops of email functionality, some data issues etc.
– we’re planning a proper image gallery feature – the plugin is in place. It is just a matter of figuring out how to best implement it.On another note:
– 55 of 176 people have logged in to the site at least once since we launched on the environment.
– 4 – number of emails from Tor asking for more contributors 🙂
– We’ve raised $585 from 15 contributors, and I’ve heard from a few folks who don’t use online paymentsOnce again, I am deeply grateful to you all for supporting this transition. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know.
Have a great weekend!

KeymasterThey should be sorted by date/time under conversation or thread. You could use your client and flag the ones you respond to.Ewan___

KeymasterTor,
I don’t think I can. Is it possible for you to sort your emails by conversation in your email client? That will collect all the responses together and allow you to follow where each one fits.
Let me know if that is helpful. I’m trying to get the site stabilized and functioning for the basics.

KeymasterCan confirm. Tor puts his money where his mouth is. And must have a good chart plotter already! Thanks Tor and John Stevenson for opening your wallets for the site.Ewan___

KeymasterOne more point on subscribed users answering Tor’s question – we have about 170 or so. I am implementing a reCAPTCHA on the registration page to prove you’re human, so you’ll see that show up if you’re registering for the first time.
I know it is annoying, but I’m deleting about 50 bot users a day, and its polluting our database. Rather stop them before they get aboard and drink our rum.

KeymasterAll,
This is a longer one, so get your coffee!
Firstly, I’d like to thank the folks who have contributed to fund the site through PayPal. Shout outs to:
-
Richard Dugger
Skip MacElhannon
Roger Bigger**Roger was our first donor and helped us get the donation button to the point where it worked past $5.00 🙂
Secondly, I’d like to acknowledge the willingness that you all have as expressed in contributing. A community is only a community when its members participate actively, and approximately 45 of our 170 or so registered users have visited the site and logged in to the forums since the site launched.
Thirdly, I’d like to say that I feel I am standing on the shoulders of giants. Many of you have participated in this community from the early days, when it was literally a mailed newsletter – and I want to acknowledge the enormous debt that new owners like myself owe to those of you who have lived on, and loved, the Pearson 424 from the start.
To business: Yes, the site redesign and continuous support does definitely cost money. We’ve just had to upgrade our service because we’re generating so many emails, so our hosting cost is about $20 a month for the WordPress environment we’re running – I’ve paid a year up front. Additionally, we’ve a few customizations we have to support, which means we pay for bug fixes and code changes on a monthly basis – right now, this is running around $100 per month until the site is stabilized and we have our awesome new Image Gallery system in place. I also paid for the components we’re using, most notably the plugin we have that sends out all these emails. In total, I think we’re at about $500-$750 thus far, and probably a few more hundred more this year.
So what is fair to you? What value do you get from the community? What else do you want us to get done? What other features should we implement? How would you like to contribute? I suggest you consider these questions as you consider what fits your budget. Donations thus far have varied between $20 and $105, for scale.
I for one, feel honored and privileged to be supporting the community in this way. I appreciate Pat Noordsij and Bob Fine for giving me the OK to move forward with this. The happiest email I received after we went live was from Pat – it read, simply, ‘Congratulations!’
With humility and gratitude.

KeymasterAll,
We’ve been losing emails occasionally because we’ve outgrown the 300 emails per hour that we originally had. To help us out, I’ve bumped our capacity to 500 emails per hour, which will help make sure that messages continue to flow.
When we have active conversations, our server sends emails to everyone on the list. Separately. So we get over the 300 email an hour limit very quickly. Good news is the mail spools for an hour, and then sends it off in another batch of 300.
So be patient! The increase in the number of emails comes at a cost, but it will improve the responsiveness of interacting via email.
I will provide another update in the next few days to cover the formatting issues we’re experiencing. Some progress, but it’s not done.
Ewan
