Looking to sell my running Westerbeke W60 in the Seattle, WA area.

Engine runs well and has 3700 hours.

Looking to pull out in the next week and it’d be great to unload the day I pull it out.

      $1,000 OBO.

That seems to be low hours for a 35 year old engine, and not extreme for any diesel. Why did you replace it? Just curious. Charlie, OneEighty #54

      Hi Rob,
I am abut to go down the repowering route myself, here in Australia.  Ours currently is a westerbeke 60, based on the brit Leyland engine.  I am still deciding on which Kubota based engine [WM, Beta or Nanni] and how to run the exhaust from the manifold, if I cant get a forward exhaust outlet as per current set up.  How did you go with this?  .
      Regards

Hello Charlie – I started becoming worried about the availability of parts for the engine. I’d like to do some extended cruising in the next few years and am concerned about doing any repairs in remote places. I’m replacing the fuel tank and figured it was the best time to repower.

Stephen & Jody – I’m not sure about the exhaust system on the Kubota marine engines. I know Beta makes a few kits for Pearson’s and there’s an article out there about a recent repower. I’ve been using Richard Carter’s Yanmar Repower writeup to understand a few items that need to be considered.

Thanks Rob, yes, I downloaded Rich’s article many years ago.  Seems I may be a bit ahead of you on engine selection.  FYI; Given our next target regions [SEAsia, Indian Ocean and Med] and dockside discussions with other cruisers [now some 30+ countries over the 6 years] I am focussed on Kubota based engines, ie  Beta, WM, Nanni.  I am meeting each company onsite over the next few week, and Nanni and Beta are currently researching their options and past fitouts for me.
many thanks again for your response to our earlier question.

Hi Mark, you can reach me at rob.osterman@outlook.com. I can provide a phone number via email — happy to chat.

Jody and Stephen – I sure hope you’re not ahead of me 🙂 I decided to go with a Yanmar 4JH80 over the Beta. The pricing in the US was quite a bit better with the Yanmar having the advantage. I found that some of the Canadian dealers had better pricing with the Beta’s given the current currency difference.

That’s a nice looking engine! It comes with a 125A alternator and turns slower than my 4JHTE.

I suggest you go with the second alternator and high-rise exhaust options when ordering. The Yanmar will sit lower than your W60 bringing the exhaust outlet lower in the boat. The high-rise elbow raises the exhaust a bit. You’ll have to push the engine a bit further back in the engine room compartment to clear the front cover.

The second alternator lets you completely separate your starter battery from the house battery and gives you a backup in case your main alternator fails.

The W60 has sold. Shortly after I hauled it out of the boat, a buyer from Craigslist came and picked it up.
