ParticipantA question for all you stalwart W 58 owners: what is the normal operating oil pressure? I’ve looked everywhere, but can’t seem to find it.

ModeratorMine, too. How long does your alarm sound after start up?

I’m not being terse. This is from my mobile.

ParticipantThanks Quent:
Two owners have responded that their W 58 runs at 50 PSI. This confirms that mine is normal at 50.

Discoverie
ParticipantHoping to revive this older thread. Discoveries’ W58 oil pressure is running at about 40psi—with the service manual specification being 40-60 psi. Towards the end of this season the low pressure alarm has come on, sometimes staying on for a minute or less. Over the last to years the pressure has gradually dropped from about 47psi to 40, so I’m thinking this is a gradule, but definite trend.
Other perhaps relevant facts
The engine runs relatively quitely
It burns no oil and gets around four hours per gallon of diesel
It always starts within a second or two, with no blue smoke
It had a new head as of 2011
Oil Service has been good with new oil and filters at least once a season on very light use, about 30 hrs this year
It’s driven in “baby-it” mode, 5.5 knots max.Thoughts on gradual decrease in oil pressure
One of two things or both could be causing this trend
Decrease in push side
Worn oil pump
Blockage in intake to oil pump
Increase in volume of pressure side
Due to wear in bearing surfacesGiven the otherwise good performance of the engine, I’m inclined to think this is a worn pump problem.
I’d very much like to hear your thoughts and experience in this area.

ParticipantMy Westerbeke book says 50 PSI at some rpm (can’t remember, but around 2000). Mine hits that, but just. Builds pressure relatively quickly on start up and buzzer quits. I have around 6000 hours on the engine.
I think you are on the right track on the cause of your problem. Basically a worn pump and/or worn main/rod bearings. As a diagnostic, perhaps put in a quart of STP to raise the viscosity. I don’t recommend running that indefinitely, but if your symptoms go away then it points to the pump or the bearings.
I assume you eliminated indication problems. Certainly a direct reading pressure gage should be tried if it hasn’t been. But since you are getting the buzzer and the low pressure readings, I suspect it isn’t indication problems since two separate transmitters are used. I assume too that you have changed the oil filter already.
I am hoping to pull my W58 tomorrow, weather permitting. I have a rebuilt W58 available to install, and my current engine is being turned in as a core. Only trouble with mine is the oil leaks and sort of high hours, though it runs fine; except for the fact it runs a bit warm in the Summer. Anyway, hoping all goes well with my swap, and I hope you find a solution to the oil pressure issues.

ModeratorDavid,
Where did you find a rebuilt W58? And do they buy cores? I’m on the fence about what to do about/with Revery’s engine…just cataloging options at this point. Thanks!Evan

ParticipantKind of a special deal, Ewan. Local Westerbeke dealer has had one in his warehouse for the past year…recently rebuilt. I painted his Fuji 45, and am getting the engine as payment. A one-off deal. He has plenty of business and doesn’t desire to take on any new enterprises.
