What would a faircloth cover in excellent condition cost? I have no idea how much they are new.

      Adam
In 2001 I pd. 5200.00 for a new one then it’s 625.00 to put on in the spring and 625 to take off and store for the winter that got old so I put it on and takeif off myself it’s not hard once you get the hang of it like anything else opn a boat just the first time is a bear after that so sweat. I like the cover it’s made so if i winter out on the hard or if i winter in no difference works both ways.

Holy smokes, 5 boat units for a winter cover! I have a canvas cover that is almost 30 years old that I’ve been nursing each year. It has so many patches that it looks like a big quilt. I’ve been thinking of replacing it, but I think I’ll put my boat units elsewhere.

I’ve also been considering the purchase of one of those huge silver tarps to be adapted as a cover. Some assembly would be required, but I’d save over $5 grand. I don’t store my boat in the water, so it is easier to cover. I think the fabric used on these is all the same, but the last two have sewn in straps and grommets. I’ll measure what I have to see which is closest.

I use the 40×50 silver tarp. I get 3-4 yrs out of it.
I use the old tarp under the new tarp to help the
      chafe.
The boat is covered from Nov 1st til Apr 15th. Bad
great lakes winters…. lots of heavy snow and ice.
If youre in a windy area, do not use the gromets, they
will rip out in the first storm.
      Next area no tarp……

      Hello team.

I know it’s been a while on this thread but being a new owner I need a winter cover for my #144 ketch.

Is there any used one for sale any of you are trying to get rid of ?

anybody found a manufacturer that does not charge and arm and a leg for one?

      Tnx

      Eduardo,
I bought two 20 x 40 White extra heady duty tarps and they’ve work very well over the past two winters. I reinforced the edges with gorilla tape and added a bunch of grommets to distribute the stress on the grommets. Use 1 gallon milk jugs about every two feet (40 in all) as weights to hold the tarp down and you’re all set. Total cost less than $200.

I just finished making a new boat cover to replace my aging cover, photo attached. This is my third. It’s made from three 18×24′ tarps, each 16mil purchased from Amazon for about $100 ea. These tarps are heavier than what is normally available from big-box stores. I expect them to last 15 to 20 years. The center tarp is uncut. The bow and stern tarps are cut to fit the shape of the hull. The boarders of the two end tarps were cut off with their grommets and sewn back on these odd-shaped panels for tying down. The three sections zipper together with a pair of 8′ zippers. Sewing was done with a Sailrite machine. A home machine would not sew this fabric. The frame is made from conduit using frame brackets purchased from Defender. A 24′ 2×8 wood rib runs down the center supported by saw-horse brackets.

The original cover had cut-outs for rigging and masts. I take the mast off for storage so there was no need to do those cut-outs. If anyone wants more info on how the frame was made and sewing hints let me know.

Photo taken at my home where we store our boat. The stairs and deck make winter maintenance a lot easier than a boatyard.

I have a used Fairclough cover and frame for sale. This is a 2-piece cover and 1 inch galvanized metal frame. Not sure how old it is. The canvas and openings etc are in good shape but there are some repairs needed for a few tears and worn spots. The frame is fine and replacement ribs can be made from 1 inch conduit from home depot. I’ve used it both in and out of water with mast up and mast out. I have a 1979 sloop – no opening for a mizzen. Located on Cape Cod. $2,000 OBO. Thanks, Ben
