You’re right, I was more fortunate in my timing visiting the Balearics, both on the way in and on the way out of the Med. Also, this was 10 years ago. Things may have been a bit less crazy then.
When I was around 20, I briefly lived in a happy hippie commune in the village of Deya on the NW coast of Mallorca. Today that town is full of tourist shops and vacation homes for well-to-do Europeans, but back in the day it was a very cool little artist’s community, virtually undiscovered. English poet/translator/novelist Robert Graves lived there at the time and would lead us “kids” on long hikes in the hills, invariably outpacing us despite his 75 years.
But I digress…
