ParticipantWhile my mast is down, I was thinking about putting a
track on the mast so when I do get some kind of a
pole, I’ll be ready for it.
Now the question is, so I can figure where to start
and end the 18 feet of track, is about where the clew
height is to deck level.
I’d like to use this for both my headsail or asym
spinnaker.
Anyone out there have a track already mounted and
where is it positioned?
thanks

ParticipantAlan:
The track on my mast for the whisker pole is only 2 ft long and it starts 2″
below the mainsail track.Since I haven’t sailed the boat yet, I can’t give any input if this is the
right position or not.Paul

ParticipantThanks Paul, I am assuming that the pole is then
stored on deck.

Alan,
Are you planning to get a fixed pole around 18′ long, or a telescoping pole?

Participant“I am assuming that the pole is then

you are going to store the outboard end on the deck and the inboard at the
top of the track?? You may also want to add for offshore in a blow, deck
storage as well.Paul

ParticipantThat was my thought. Maybe not 18’…. haven’t decided
on the length yet. I just thought since my mast was
down, it would be easier to put in the 100 or so
screws on the ground rather than from a bosuns chair.— Silver Heels <> wrote:

ParticipantI’ve heard of that, but I am thinking it would be
firmly attached to the mast, why would high winds
change that… not like it’s going to come off. I
could not imagine taking that 18′ length of pipe off
the mast while the deck is a heaving and a pitchen
I could be wrong though

ParticipantApparently the reasons are to reduce windage and get weight down in a real
blow. Also, if you get dismasted, you will still have your spin pole to jury
rig something with.I assume you would be bringing it down to the deck level about the same time
you are hanking on your storm jib to the inner stay 🙂 – hopefully before
it gets to wild up there.Paul

Alan I dont have track mounted yet but it is alot easier drilling and tapping with the mast down. Also start at either one end and work to the other end, do not start at either end and work toward the middle. David

Three drills: #1 for the hole, #2 for the tap, and #3 for the screw
driver.
Use a bit of tap-magic on the tap and you will have a much more
delightful time at it.
Also, use Tuf-Gel in every hole.

ParticipantI usually use a 5/16 transfer punch to make sure I hit
the center of the hole.
Ever hear of power tapping?
Do you think Tuf-Gel is better than Lanacote. I have
both?
Thanks for the suggestions.
