The details of our saloon light remodel are as follows. The two
problems with the existing fixtures were the yellowing and fragility of
the plastic shades and the fact that the bulbs were 25 watt incandescent
bulbs, nice color but energy hungry. The first problem was addressed by
finding on line (acrylite-shop.com), a supplier of frosted plexiglass
tubing. We used their ACRYLITE Satinice tube colorless with a 4 inch
o.d. and 0.118 wall thickness. We had them cut the tubes to the finished
length of 7 inches. Total cost for five pieces (I bought one extra in
case of drilling mishaps) including tax and shipping was $113.74. All
that remained to finish the shades was to drill two 3/4″ holes for the
wood rod and one 13/32″ hole for the wire exit. The trick here is to
drill with very light pressure and slow feed and to start small and step
up slowly.
The second problem was to find a LED bulb that would approximate the
intensity and color quality of the 25 watt incandescent bulbs. We found
at https://store.marinebeam.com a 4 watt frosted globe Edison base bulb
which is also of constant current design which should give it a good
long life.
Pictures are attached to show the old shade and the rebuilt fixtures,
the drilling setup, and an illuminated fixture.
