ParticipantWhile getting ready to repack the rudder packing, I noticed that the plastic “bearing” on the rudder shaft that surrounds the shaft and drops in place between the shaft and a strong wooden cross member has popped out of its intended location. Has anyone replaced this cheap plastic “bearing”? with what? and how?
Thanks.

ParticipantRod,This was brought to my attention several years ago by Jack Tyler. He was looking for the source of some vibration while sailing across the Pacific. He just pushed it back in place and put a hose clam around the rudder shaft to hold it in place.  That made me check my rudder post and sure enough mine was above the cross beam (pic attached). Seems to be a common issue, if not a major problem. I just pushed the bushing back in place. I'm sure it is back up now. I think I'll use the hose clamp solution if I don't hear of a better solution (not requiring dropping the rudder) on this thread.Regards,John Stevensonwww.svsarah.comSarah's Blog

I’ve never had an issue with the rudder packing or post. One of these days I expect to be in there replacing the packing. I’ll be watching the thread.Hope all is well with you.

ParticipantThanks John-
Rich- I had a leak from the rudder packing (at least I hope it was from the packing and not from the strut thru-bolts). So I am going to repack this year. As for the “bearing”, I’ll probably just go with John’s suggestion of a hose clamp to keep it in place-

ParticipantI had the same problem. There was a hose clamp which caused some rust that eventually seized the plastic bearing to the shaft and wore away the wood base. Solved the problem by mounting a plastic 1 inch plastic plate over the existing bearing and which also served as a bearing. Works well.

Participantone more time: http://www.svsarah.com/Sarah/Images/Rigging/Rudder%20Bushing.jpg    The server strips carriage returns and line feeds. I put a few spaces after the link, maybe it will work this time.  Regards,John Stevensonwww.svsarah.comSarah's Blog
