      Hi All,
I’m trying to get a quote for Standing Rigging on a P424 Ketch, including (SSB antenna/insulators) from RiggingOnly.com. They don’t have any records of the specs for a P424 ketch, but said if I get a couple names/dates of people they’ve provided rigging to, they can give me a pretty accurate quote.

Of course, I’ll still have to measure my actual rig, to ensure the rig is right for this vessel.

I’d appreciate if anyone could give me their name and approx date of re-rig. Also, what your general feelings about using RiggingOnly.com was. Did you think you saved alot? did you install and/or tune the rig yourself? If you used someone else, do you still think ordering the rigging was a cost saver? Any other insight you might provide would be greatly appreciated.

      thank you,

      Paul

      Hi Paul,

I could dig out the drawing I have and measure the rigging so you could get
an idea. Also, there may be one on the site you can download. If so, you
could supply it to RiggingOnly and they could quote based on that. Do you
have a ketch or sloop? I only have a ketch drawing, but there may be
others that have the sloop one.

IN 2010, I paid ~$4950 including WA State Sales tax for my entire rig
including isolating the upper leg of the backstay for SSB.

I used Port Townsend Rigging and they re-used turnbuckles which did not
need replacing. I think all of them were fine if I recall correctly. You
might try getting a quote from them as well.

      Hope that helps.

I had my sloop re-rigged about 15 years ago. As I recall, the bill was $13000. This included a new roller-furler. My rigger used Norsemen fittings for the lower connection and swage-fittings on the upper end. This was a bit more expensive than all crimp-fittings, but the bottom ends tend to corrode faster than the upper end. Norsemen and Stay-Lock mechanical fittings are more reliable. I also went up a size on the upper shrouds. If I had to do it again, I’d go the same route. I’m not sure I would go with a mail-order company. My rigger insured that everything fit properly. He provided a very competitive price (http://www.nerigging.com/). If you are in the northeast, you might give him a call for a quote.

You may be able to reuse your wire if you wish. I believe that you can purchase long turn-buckles that would allow you to cut off your existing turn-buckles and attach new ones. This of course only makes sense if your upper swage fittings look good.

      Regards

      Paul,

I did the whole enchilada with RiggingOnly.com in 2007, including new
standing rigging, lifelines & Sta-Set X halyards, AND paying them to install
the Sta-Loks at one end of each shroud & stay. Here’s the cost breakdown:

      04/12 04/12 RTQY5S8M RIGGING ONLY FAIRHAVEN MA Standard Purch 453.06 –
      for lifelines
      04/13 04/13 W349HS8M RIGGING ONLY FAIRHAVEN MA Standard Purch 382.00 –
      for Sta-Set X, 600′
      04/18 04/18 SLKYYV8M RIGGING ONLY FAIRHAVEN MA Standard Purch 3,758.02 –
      for standing rigging

      $4,593.08 total

I believe I managed to hit them up for a trade discount at the time based on
my authentic affiliation with my (former) yacht dealership, so the above
prices might be a bit lower than 2007 retail. I can dig up the measurements
and PDF invoices if you like, but it’s probably wise to do your own
measurements before ordering the wire cuts and I’m sure prices have changed
      since then.

I dealt mostly with the owner, Tom. He and everyone else there were
terrific, always helpful, no BS. Tom even advised me that I could safely
save some money using Sta-Lok’s only on the bottom of the standing rigging
because swage fittings aloft will last as long as the wire. Somehow a number
of their wires arrived a couple of inches short. I’m pretty sure it was
their fault and not my measurements, and I told them so. They made good on
it by sending me 2″ toggles for every wire, which provided the extra length
needed and improved my overall rig, too. No complaints here.

According to my research in 2007, Rigging Only was the best deal in the
states for top quality stuff. I have no reason to think that has changed.

      Good luck,

      Tor

I went the DIY route with Rigging Only. I ordered Hi-Mod mechanical terminals for all the upper and lowers from them for $2500. I ordered from Loos Wire 350′ of 3/8″ and 200′ of 1/4″ at $2.25/$1.45 per ft respectively for a cost of $1100. This included enough extra wire for a spare stay for both the main and mizzen.

I did not buy back stay isolators as I was going to just run a separate antenna wire for the SSB.

      These prices were in 2008.

No, I had the rig off (refininshed the spars) it was very easy to put it
all back together. THe only challenge was finding the proper clevis pins.
One set I couldn’t find at all and had them made.

FYI: I just had the mechanical fitting on the top of my forestay come apart and almost lost the whole rig. The culprit? The rigger that installed it used 5200 to “set” the fitting, rather than the correct Locktite application. Luckily, my jib halyard held it together in lighter winds off O’ahu.

      Hi All,

Thanks so much for the great replies. So it seems like nobody here (or reading the forum lately) has used RiggingOnly very recently. Looks like Paul (2008) and Tor (2007) and it seems like $5k is the number.

Patrick’s Pt Townsend suggestion might be my way to go (since I’m in Seattle).

Again, thank you all for your suggestions.

      Hello Paul,
I replaced the rigging on my main mast (minus forestay) March 2012 through riggingonly.com. $3300.00 with three insulators on the back stay. Swaged uppers, stalok lowers. I love staloks.
Very satisfied with their customer service.
I ordered the rigging but did not install it until a couple of months later. The day we were going to step the mast I found the swaged uppers had the wrong diameter hole for the pins. I called them, they paid to ship the rigging back and had me new rigging in three days. Only a minor inconvenience. Very easy to work with and $1600 cheaper than local rigger. Sorry but $1600 is $1600.
      Very happy with riggingonly.com
