ParticipantHello all
I am planing to replace all my ports. With the heavy rains that we have had in the past few months the leaks have gotten worse. My time to work on the boat is limited to about a six hour day every other week. My plan is to remove the ports and temporarily fill the hole until I have them all out. I am sure the core will need some work and I plan to paint the outside. Also the wood panel on the interior will need to be replaced. my plan is to make a storm shutter of plywood and seal with butyl tape. Anything I do will probably be better than the existing ports. While doing the ports I will remove the eyebrow and fill the holes with resin.
I am looking for any guidance to make this job easier I know several of the group have done this before so I am open for input. New Found Metal has been the ports that I have heard the most about. Is there another source that anyone has used with good results?
Thanks for any suggestions
Linus

ParticipantWe replaced the forward most 6 ports using NFM ports 10 years ago. Great product. I recently bought larger ports to go in the head and aft cabin but haven't had time to do them.My cabin sides at the ports were solid. No core.

ParticipantI can add my endorsement to Ricks. The NFM portlights are great and I have had no leakage issues. My boat came with these installed, so I don’t have installation tips. But, I removed and rebuilt my SS lights on my Caliber (not NFM) some years ago. Project went pretty well, and I did two lights at a time, using Viz-queen and duct tape for the openings while the lights were out. Worked well with no leakage.
If your head compartment is like mine, you may have to perform some minor mods to the boat interior to accommodate the NFM light. On mine, the bulkhead in the shower had to be routed out somewhat to accommodate one of the dogs. Also, on the forward end of the light, I had to do some slicing/dicing so that the portlight would open all the way and save my head from banging the partially open light while brushing my tooth. I can send photos if you’d like once I get back to the States in about three weeks. Let me know if you want the photo.

ParticipantHi Everyone,
I replaced the six forward ports on Xanadu with NFM ports. I ordered the tinted ones, about $20 more but it helps keep heat down and a measure of privacy. The install went well and I didn't use their template. Just use lots of chalking. The NFM ports tend to rust a bit under the rubber seal for the screen. Getting the teak trim for inside is a good idea as well so that the outside lip doesn't stick out too far.
For the four aft ports, I had taken the plastic lenses out and replaced them with tempered auto glass, tinted of course. This was an easy, not too expensive replacement.Jack

ParticipantIt appears many of my emails to this forum never arrive. Here’s the text of one I sent 10 days ago:
Rick,
I replaced the 2 aftermost large portlights (shower stall and aft cabin bunk) with opening aluminum portholes, possibly Bomar #N3519’s, which at the time cost $670 for the pair from Port Supply. They fit the existing cutout with only a little fussing and have served well for the past 6 or 7 years. All the rest of Silverheels’ ports are original, including 2 small opening portholes. Any that have leaked over the years I removed and re-bedded with rope caulk. None leak now.
Silverheels’ remaining 2 large original portlights have tinted lenses, which look like leprosy now. Replacing those lenses is on one of my to-do lists. If anyone has original long portlights they don’t need that are clear or clearly tinted, I’d love to get those lenses (windows), with or without the frames. Thanks!
The teak veneer paneling along the coachhouse insides (around the ports) was in good shape when I got this boat, but during my campaign to lighten the interior I painted them off-white along with a lot of other dark surfaces. That’s a quick, easy, inexpensive and practical alternative to replacement if the wood is in good shape, whether or not it’s water stained.

ParticipantAnother recommendation for the NFM ports. If you wait for a boat show you can get the boat show discount even ordering direct from the factory.
My cabin sides were also solid, no core. Also replaced all the veneer siding when I replaced the ports. If you do the wood I got a perfect match buying teak veneer plywood and staining with Minwax Gunstock stain.
Also, I bought the teak trim pieces from NFM but ended up not using them. If anyone is interested I have several, eight if I recall, already stained and coated with ten coats of hand rubbed varnish. A deal can be had.

ParticipantThe teak trim pieces are for the small Beckson plastic ports that have the 5″ X 12″ cutout in the cabin. So fit the NFM standard SS 512 rectangular port. I can take some photos if you’re interested.

ParticipantHi SkipThanks, I have the Beckson 512 ports. Whilst storing the boat some have leaked and damaged the trim. I’ll measure my cutouts. The damage is in the v- berth and main salon. Please email photos.I’m not sure of costs to send to Caribbean, I’m in Rodney Bay, St Lucia. DHL, FedEx or UPS. I guess I would need weight or volume. Would be happy to pay your time for packing and des patching, if it looks worthwhile. I’ll look into costs of getting teak pieces here. Thanks again for your help.Kind regardsMarkSent from my iPad

ParticipantHi Mark,
Sorry for the delay in my reply. Having problems with my email supplier (ATT who is really being a pain) on top of boat stuff. Stepped the mast, installed new roller furler, finishing the engine, mast wiring, on and on.
Read my previous posts and not sure I made perfect sense. Just to be clear, the teak trim pieces I have are for the New Found Metals 5X12 SS ports. I can send photos. They were stained to match the Pearson interior and mostly do except some of the teak pieces were cut from much lighter wood that didn’t take the stain as well.
Not sure how to email the photos direct. Will tinker with the forum a bit to see if I can figure it out. Or I can post them here.
If your Beckson ports are shot, have broken latches or such, I saved mine from the NFM replacement project. All tabs, hinges, etc are good.

</tbody></table>Will check the lenses on the Becksons. As I recall they were clear with little scratching. Dusty and dirty from sitting in a box in the shed but nothing a little water won’t fix. Will check them out this weekend.

ParticipantI’ll add my 2 cents to the thread. About 5 years ago I replaced all my opening ports fwd with NFM. I searched for a long time for all the useual replaements for my fixed. I ended up buying the long fixed from a company in Canada called Bomon (very close name to the other one). I was greatly pleased with their product and I am still delighted. I can’t remember the pricing but they were right inline with everything else. Great ports.

ParticipantI think I have added photos of one of the Beckson ports I’m removing. This one is pretty representative of them all. The lens is a bit yellowed from age and sun but clear with very little scratching.
The hinges, tabs and latches are all good with no breaks or cracks.
I have five removed so far with five more to go. Anyone interested I would like $40 each.

</tbody></table>Well not for you or most others but for someone with a busted Beckson port and no budget for new SS ports then it might be just what they were looking for.
