I removed mine years ago.  Weight from the batteries was giving the boat a permanent list to starboard.  The house batteries are now in the bilge where the weight does some good.  The locker is now quite large whereas it was pretty useless before.  It’s fill of stuff however.  No matter how much storage you have, you will fill it.

I’m aware that there is some danger to them if the boat floods.  I have a separate starter battery up high in the aft hanging locker.

Yeah – I’m putting 12 4v batteries in the bilge – thanks to whomever posted photos of how to cut hatches there – 48v system with 12 big batteries and then 4×12 for the house, all oasis firefly carbon Nanofoam units.
If my bilge is full, I have bigger problems than no engine. Sailing wise, this is the right thing to do – weight directly above the keel will do some good.

How did you get the fuel tank out?  I pulled mine out in one piece after I got rid of the Westerbeast.  The hard part was undoing the top fittings. On my way to the dumpster with it, I was lucky enough to run into a guy who offered me $25 for it!

You previously mentioned having a tight fit with the motor?  How did you resolve that?  I’m curious about where you mounted the control unit.
