ParticipantI’ve just bought a new West Marine inflatable dinghy. It’s PVC, not Hypalon. I’m thinking of painting at least
the upper side of the pontoons now, while it’s new, to protect the fabric from UV damage from the outset. Has
anyone else done this, or do you have thoughts on why it might be a bad idea? Also, does anyone know of a
paint that adheres really well to PVC?Tor

ParticipantI have an older Caribe inflatable the PO gave me with the boat.I’ve painted it twice.West Marine sells a paint in 2 color choices-grey and white.A good color match helps. Also look on the internet. All colors but very pricey..I think they’ll specify whether it ‘s good for PVC- I think West Marine covers both.
The surface has to be very clean-if not the stuff will peel off within a short time.Even if put on well and 2 coats some of it will peel if rubbed up against a hard surface-like a SS ladder hanging off the back.My old dinghy looks as good as new but I do have to touch it up once in a while.Helped me delay a boat unit or 2 investment : >
The store in Oriental recommneded a top srpay clear coat over the coating for added protection.Haven’t used it yet.
The PO had covered the pontoons with sunbrella fabric-dark blue.Looked great and great protection but was getting old and faded.I have scene that also in a boat tips magazine. Not too difficult
and good protection from the sun-especially since the biggest killer for PCV is the sun.I seem to recall you have are good with canvas.Just some thoughts.Post generated from Pearson424 Forum using Mail2Forum
