      New found metals.
They’re probably the best out there!

Concur. Newfound metals is expensive, but a very safe and durable port light. Plus they make the boat look great!

Just got 1981 424, am planning on replacing all opening and non opening ports. Planning on using Lewmar ports, opinions from the group?

      Thanks

Are cast aluminum ports stock on 424’s? I’ve heard that the factory put plastic ports on, but my boat has the heavy cast aluminum opening dogged ports that appear old but I don’t know if they were original or upgraded at some time. With cleaning and new seals they are working fine and I have been able to polish them to a near SS shine.

The aluminum opening ports are original equipment on at least the early models.  Mine is #2 and has the ports.  I think Pearson switch to the Beckson ports sometime during the production run.  The rest of my ports are fixed with aluminum frames and tempered glass lenses.

OK – I will be replacing all 10 of my port lights in the next three weeks. Photos and detailed instructions, perhaps even video of me sweating and cursing to follow.

I installed 6 NFM ports 12 years ago.
Last month I installed 2 more (large ones in the Head and aft cabin)
Suggest you look at using Bed-It Butyl tape instead of the black gooey butyl tape from NFM.

This vendor also has a how to install NFM ports that I found useful/helpful.
Suggest your get the NFM template and counter bore tool.
A small trim router with a bearing guide made quick work of getting the openings cut out properly.

My 1980 ketch came with only 4 opening ports: port side in aft cabin; port side over stove; stbd side above head sink; stbd side in shower stall.  I removed them, had them sand blasted and powder coated, and fitted new seals and lenses.  Look great and a cheap alternative.

’81 laid, ’86 commissioned Cutter here with 12 ports – 4 metal ones in the aft have no leaks. 8 forward Beckson plastic ports leak like mad – I’ve got tarp over them for now until I reseal them.

I’m guessing your powder coated ports (Kalinowski) are aluminum?

If anyone has successfully removed and re-bedded the plastic ports I’d love to hear about it. I imagine I at minimum need new trim rings.

Wish I could do SS ports but with a refit looking at me it’s not happening this year.

I guess I’m lucky as I’ve never had a leak from the plastic, non-opening
      ports.
Yes, my four refinished ports are aluminum.  They’re not perfect, but look pretty good for the dollars spent (about $150).

The outer flange rings snap off and are only held in place as press fits around the port and with silicone. Be liberal with the application especially around the port and screw holes. Not a hard job except for removing the old sealant. The gaskets fit a lot better if soaked in hot water before installation. Wipe the gaskets with silicone lube to prevent them from sticking to the port window. The lenses can be rid of crazing with a headlight refinishing kit from a automotive store. Plastic Polish  works wonders

I saw the butyl tape testimonials and I have also found this product fairly easy to use and  very effective for bedding all kinds of hardware on deck. I found the stuff at Princess Auto in Canada (discount stuff of all kinds) which I think is similar to harbour freight in the U.S., the price is similar in $ Cdn for each roll instead of two.

1983 cutter #220. OP ordered it with several modifications/improvements including all 10(6 small, 4 large) bomar aluminum opening ports.
