ParticipantWell I've managed to avoid working on taxes for several days while playing with this little project. I guess I'll have to start doing taxes tomorrow so it is time to release a preliminary version of the package. It also time to get some feedback before I spend a lot more effort on things no one (including myself) will ever use.
I've attached 3 files:
LayoutBInventory.xls is a blank inventory workbook using the Pete's original diagram and locker layout. This is the workbook most people can use to start their own inventory
SarahInventory.xls is a partially completed (actually only 2 lockers and 1 drawer) inventory of Sarah stuff. You can use this workbook to test drive the forms in the inventory.
P424InventoryReleaseDoc1.0.doc is a basic piece of documentation on how to use the workbook and the forms. I suggest doing a quick read through on this document before opening either of the workbooks in your version of Excel. There are several areas in which I would like to get some feedback, but please provide feedback in any area that is important to you.
- Compatibility: I developed these forms using VBA and MS Excel 2003. This should work with anything after Office98, but I only have 2003 to work with. If you normally use an earlier version of Excel on board, please give it a try and let me know if anything goes south. BTW there are probably bugs even with the 2003 product.
- Completeness: Ignore for the moment to items in the release document I've said are coming (key word search, printing, customization), but are there functional things you would like to see in the final product. I like Tor's suggestion of critical kit inventory and I have some ideas on how to integrate that into this workbook. Pete, you posted a feature you'd like to have and I told you I'd get to you on it. Now I can't find your post in either my inbox or in the email list forum on the web site. Did I just image your post?
- Bugs. Anything I said would work, but doesn't. Actually don't worry even if I said it wouldn't work. If you clicked a button and it did something bad let me know
I've tried to keep the concept simple, but there likely are those who don't really care about categorizing things on board. They just want to identify what they have and where it is. You can ignore the category specifications if you want and the workbook should work just fine for you. They do not need to be entered. If they aren't entered it just means you can't use the categories as search criteria. I thinks everyone wants the location specification (why else have an inventory).
For those who want to categorize their inventory I know my categories and sub categories are very incomplete. Given me feed back on the categories that are important to you, but not in the current release. It is a lot easier to remove a category or subcategory for customization than to add one, so I might as well make the next release as complete as possible. Now a warning. Or as Meryl Streep said in a movie I've otherwise forgotten, “NOW a warning!”. Obviously there is going to be at least one more update to this package. I really haven't looked into how I'm going to distribute updates to the VBA code other than a complete new workbook. So if you use this version to do a complete inventory of your stuff and then I give you a new workbook there could be problems if I've changed something that makes it difficult to transfer your existing data to the new workbook. I don't believe that will happen I expect to have a way you can just update your workbook with the new VBA code. At worst I believe it will only require that you copy and paste data from on the old workbook to the new one. However, I'd hate to have someone spend days completely inventorying their boat and then have to manually re-enter the data in the new workbook. Again, I don't think that will happen, but then as a kid I thought the Edsel was a really neat car. So maybe the prudent think would be to just inventory a few lockers to test the workbook rather than the entire boat.
Now back to the taxes.

John,
We could get a cert for the program thus it can be approved once to run
macros and not require approval again. I have done this in the past for
some of my excel spreadsheets with macros. I will gather some info and
send it on as I have time.Pete

Glad the first impression is favorable. Yes Excel always asks
that question when you open a file that has Macros. I think you
can turn down the security in Excel to make it go away, but it is
always a good idea to know if the file has Macros before you allow
it to open. I would not open a file with Macros if I didn’t know
anything about it.John

I am in awe. What a cool tool! I’m only slightly familiar with
Excel, but I think I can handle this. My version appears to be
Excel 2000, and your program seems to be functioning in it to
the extent I’ve experimented. Will spend some more time
playing with it later. Being a bit slow on the uptake, I’ll
have to re-read the instructions sheet with the program
running, so I can practice each function and instruction once
or twice. Then I’ll have it.Offhand, the only thing I see we’ll need (and is probably
already there) is the ability to add & delete lockers
according to our individual boats, and
categories/sub-categories according to our needs, but overall
I’m stoked!Oh, I get prompted to choose Enable or Disable each time I
open the program. I assume we’re supposed to Enable them, right? Many thanks for your efforts. This is much more fun than
boring old taxes.Tor
