ParticipantDoes anyone have a Max-Prop 3 blade classic. If so, would you know the pitch you have set. My boatyard took the prop off and mixed up the pitch settings and I am looking for a starting point. Mine is a 21″ prop, 1.5″ shaft, and of course Left screw. I still have the W-60.

Charlie,
We have a 20″ 3-blade Max-prop. I can check tomorrow morning at the
boat for our settings for 13 pitch which works well with our W-58. Don’t
know if our settings will work for you but they should be close.Dave

ParticipantThanks Dave. The 13 was the number I was looking for. I’m sure there is a chart to convert that to the settings. I wonder if the pitch should go up or down for a 21″ oversized prop.

Call PYI in Seattle in the morning. Talk to Fred Hutchinson. He can tell you which direction you should go for your prop size

ParticipantI talked to Fred at PYI and he knew exactly what the settings were for the P424 with a 21 inch wheel. I’ll know if it works when I get it in the water. Thanks for the help.

With our Max-prop we ended up going from a 16 inch pitch with our W63 to a 22 inch pitch with our new Bate Marine 60. Boat speed has increased considerably at lower RPM.

ParticipantSorry, Pete, I didn’t see your question.
For a 21″blade with 1.5″shaft, left turn, and a 3 blade classic Max-Prop, he recommended a 18 degree blade angle and the Max-Prop settings are Y=B and X=N. That was with with the W-60. -

I don’t know much about Max Props, but 21×18 seems way too big. As I recall, my 424 originally came with a 19×14 3-blade fixed prop. I now have an 18.5×12 which feels a bit small but works well enough. Increasing to an 18 pitch doesn’t sound right.

Mine is 21x 13 – but it’s a W58 if that matters.

I have a 20″ Max Prop. It was installed originally with the W60. When I
repowered to the Yanmar 4JH4AE the blades were re-set as recommended by
PYI, but then we had to reduce the pitch in order to get the engine RPMs
over 2600. I’ve got the settings documented somewhere on board.Regards,

ParticipantRich, you are right on with your observation. The 18 pitch which is what I have is too much pitch, and I can only get 2000 rpm max. On the good side, I can get 6kts at 1500rpms and burn much less fuel. It doesn’t seem to lug the engine.
