ParticipantHi All,
I know a bunch of people have had mast pulpits (granny bars) made and I believe most have used the same fabricator. Could anyone give me the contact for the fabricator who’d been making them? I think I’m ready to add some to my P424, but would prefer to have someone knowledgeable (who already has a pattern/measurements) make them for me.Thank you,
Paul

ModeratorPaul,
I’ll do a deep search tonight, but I think the info is still here.
If you’re willing to head this up, I’d like a set made as well…and I’m sure there are some other “new” owners that might be interested (or they should be lol)Evan

ParticipantHi All,I sent a note to my contact at Railmakers yesterday. I included the diagram from Tor’s 2008 email (does anyone know if Railmakers created that?). I asked if they still had their template from Tor’s order and requested an up-to-date quote (as it could very likely be more now).I’ll get back with the group, once I hear back. My intentions will be to order the version with the bales and with the “step bar:”Please stand by.Best,Paul Audi“Talisman” -

ParticipantEvan,……Oh yes, they should be(lol)…My previous owner was one of the originals who bought a set of these pulpits. They are priceless for any offshore work, every time I snuggle my butt into one at sea, my body relaxes and thanks my buddy.Earl(PO)…If another group of buyers can come together and convince the original fabricator to build another order at a reasonable price, everybody will go away smiling.Kens/vPAINKILLERhull#91presently-GrenadaTaking what comes as I get it, using it all as much as I can and trying hard to leave all the shit behind.

ParticipantHi Rick,I’m getting a quote now from Railmakers, but wanted to inquire about your final price. With the 316 upgrade, bails and the optional step bar, what was your final price? I realize this was 2008 and the new prices is likely to be higher, but I’d love to get a base line before I try to negotiate with Railmakers. Thanks, paul -

ParticipantHi Ben,Per my notes in the last couple days, i’m currently talking to Dave. But if you wanna take over, feel free. Not sure if it’s a good idea for both of us to be doing it.Dave already quoted me $875 per pair of Mast Pulpits. This is a substantial increase from previous rounds (from 2008/2008). I’d sent a note back to him to see if he might be able to improve the price. I was waiting until I hear back from him, before reaching out the P424 List.Best, paul -

ParticipantI am interested! Currently cruising in Eleuthra, so responses from me may be slow. But the standard pulpit with the bells and whistles that Tor installed looks mighty fine.

ParticipantHi All,
I’m getting more news from Dave at Railmakers and here’s what I’ve got so far:Using the T316 and adding the step, the cost he’s quoting is $875 (prices have gone up since the last round 9 years ago). If we get enough commitments, that number might come down a little, but for now, I’d say that’s his price. You will also have to pay tax/shipping. I’ve started a list of those who indicated they were interested, as I’d like to give Dave some idea of how many orders he might receive. If you’ve already told me your interested, no need to respond again (unless you’re NOT interested any longer). Others can chime in too. Again, I’ll give the names/list to Dave, but once everything is final, EACH INDIVIDUAL will need to call/email Dave to pay and give shipping information.
It might take a few weeks to do, even once I pull the trigger. Dave has suggested he make mine first and send them to me, to be sure they fit properly. Then he’d move on to the other orders.
I’m also considering having Dave make some T316 stainless hand rails to replace our teak ones. He quoted them at $120 for the short ones (42″-ish) and $180 for the longer ones (67″-ish). If anyone else is interested in those, I can let Dave know there would be additional orders for the hand rails too.
Still not a final deal, but here is the update. Should be pretty close to final.
Best,
Paul Audi

ParticipantHi All,
So I haven’t quite finalized (hopefully hear from Dave on Monday), but wanted to recap the list of people I believe are interested in Mast Pulpits:Paul Audi / Talisman
Evan / Revery – (and rails??)
Roger / Discoverie
Ben Frothingham / Papaya (#81)
Randy / Varuna
Ewan O’Leary
Dennis Home / Flying Mare (#22 1978)
David / Blue Moon
Gary Moates / J B MoatesIf your name is above, please provide me with your last name (if I don’t have it), I’ll include your name on my list for Dave. Looks like we’ve got 9 people ordering. that should be a plus for Dave/Railmakers.
IF your name is above and you DON’T want to be in on the order, just let me know and I’ll pull your name off the list.
To reiterate, Dave wants to make one set first (to be sure they fit). In fact, he might already be making them, to test on my boat (that may be the delay in our conversation). Once he’s sure they are right, he’ll make/distribute the rest. Once we have final design, each of you would call Railmakers (or write) and pay individually.
More to follow.
Best,

ModeratorPaul,
Thanks again for heading this up! Question on the rails…is that per rail or per set? If it’s per rail, I’ll have to pass…which is ok since our teak ones are fine.Evan Morgan

ParticipantHello Ewan,
I apologize if this is repetitive but I am still interested in the mast pulpits, two each. Last name is Tye.
For some reason, most of my replies to threads aren’t making it to the website. I’ve responded to several, and the responses do not show. Hopefully this one makes it.
I have been traveling on Blue Moon in the Bahamas so that might have some bearing on the problem. Back in the States now, but still on the boat for another month or so.
Thanks so much Ewan for leading this charge!

ParticipantI’m interested to know if the previous plan for mast pulpits is open source? The price is a bit prohibitive for me, but I have local relationships with fabricators.
If it’s not stepping on anyone’s toes, where can I access the design for P424 pulpits?

ParticipantHi all,
I responded to the thread last night (via email) but it doesn’t appear to be here, so excuse me if I’m repeating. The first mast pulpits (me being the guinea pig, using the design from last time) is currently underway. The first pair should be done in a couple weeks. Once we’ve confirmed they are the right design, Dave (at Railmakers) is ready to make more for anyone else interested. From Railmakers, they will be $800 a pair. Rob had asked about the design (to explore other fabricator options), so I’ve attached that here.
I’ll have more news once the first pulpits are made. I still have the list of interested parties (I believe 7 or 8 additional folks) and can pass that on to Dave/Railmakers any time. Once he’s ready, I’d recommend calling him and giving him your CC to start your work *(that’s how I did it).
Best,
Paul

ParticipantHi Rob,The design was emailed around a while ago – I have taken the liberty to attach it here.If we are not yet committed to the vendor in CA a competing bid might be interesting if you have connections to a fabricator.Yours is the first email I have received in a while from the forum, so I don't know if there has been additional discussion or progress on ordering from CA.Thanks, Ben (Papaya #81) -

ParticipantHi Rob,I’ve attached the document I got from the previous round of orders (from Railmakers in SoCal). Dave at Railmakers is currently working on mine. I gave him my deposit a week or so ago and he said it’d be probably 3 weeks before he was finished. For all who are interested in the Railmaker Mast Pulpits, they’ll be $800 a pair and Dave has asked to wait until we see how mine fit (I’m the guinea pig) before he cranks out a bunch of them. I have the list of folks who were interested (I believe its about 7 or 8 of you at this point).Once Dave is confident with his design, you can start the orders. I’m sure he’ll be stoked. If there are other fabricators doing the same work for less (and I suspect that is possible), I’m sure we’d all like to know. For reference, Dave is doing the Pulpits in 316ss and including the step and the bails.Best,PaulS/V Talisman -

ParticipantHello Paul,
Just got back stateside and have more reliable e-mail, though we are still traveling on Blue Moon for another 5 weeks or so. Anyway, my last name is Tye and I still want two each mast pulpits. If I understand your instructions I should hold off calling Dave/Railmakers until I hear from you? Many thanks for handling this!

ParticipantHi All,
I know it’s been a long time coming, but I think Dave at Railmakers should be ready to hear from any of you who’d like to have the Mast Pulpits done.Railmakers (Dave)
864 W. 18th Street
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
949.642.6506I received mine about 2 weeks ago, BUT they were just a little off. The outboard leg was 36″, when the design called for 37-1/8″. As a result when the inboard legs were flat/flush with the deck, the outboard leg was about an inch higher than the sloping coachroof. I suggested to Dave that I could make a spacer, but he insisted I send them back to him to redo them. I haven’t received them back yet, but I know he sent them this week (should be at my door shortly). He planned to extend the leg 1-1/8″ and said after polishing, I wouldn’t be able to tell it was an added piece.
They look fantastic and so do the custom handrails that Dave made for me. So after summer sailing season is over, my big project will be removing my teak handrails and eye-brows and installing all these shiny new pieces. I’ll post some photos in October.
Best,
Paul

ModeratorPaul,
How’d the reworked pulpits fit? After this pesky hurricane passes, I’ll be ordering Revery’s set but wanted to make sure they had the design straightened out. If you have them installed, did you get any good pictures? 🙂
We hope everyone is out of Irma’s path. As it looks now, Revery will have to ride through a Cat 3 hit. She’s as set as she can be, so it’s just finger crossing at this point. Our thoughts are with everyone in her path.
