ParticipantRead an interesting post where a new Jenneau 50 had it’s automatic docking system go awry causing the boat to hit the rocks in an inlet. The crew was unable to shut down the engine as well.
This got me to thinking, if I needed to shut down my W58 manually how would I do it? I only have a key switch below and a push button switch in the cockpit. These must go to an electric solenoid that shuts off the fuel supply, hence shutting down the engine. Is there a way to manually shut this solenoid off? Right now the only way I can think of to stop the engine if I lost electric is to stuff a large cushion in the air intake of the W58. I would feel better knowing where that solenoid is, and how to manually close it.

ParticipantI can shut off the fuel manually at the twin Racors
inside the engine compartment, but I’d be interested to
know the same about the Yanmar 4JHE.Tor

ParticipantThe solenoid attaches to a lever on the side of the injection pump. You can manually push the lever.

Won’t the engine run for quite a while before the fuel in the lines is
exhausted?On 1/14/2014 8:45 AM, Silverheels wrote:

ParticipantThat does seem likely, Pete. Apparently, though,
there’s a solenoid lever arm on my Yanmar that will
shut it down much faster. I suppose I ought to locate
it in case of future need.Tor

ParticipantA sizable rag in the intake will shut it down very quickly if needed. Air intakes with a circular opening are easily plugged with a tennis ball. I’ve seen engine compartments with a ball secured to a string for this purpose.

ParticipantAll you have to do is reach in on the side of the injector pump and pull the shutoff lever. Some are connected to a cable that you pull and others are connected to a solenoid actuator that you activate with a button or are energized by the key-switch. I’ve never seen a diesel engine without one.
