ParticipantI want to service our V Drive, and before I attempt to lift it myself, can anyone who has done this tell me if it is indeed a one person lift, and if not, how you have lifted it? Many thanks

ParticipantI did a one person lift all the way to the dock. But not a good idea. This unit is heavy, and tough to get two people on, but moving it bears some forethought. I was probably lucky I didnât lose my balance from the boat to the dock. An exceptionally robust person can probably handle it safely, but was definitely a âgruntâ for me, and Iâm pretty healthy.

ParticipantOn Hi Flite, after we lifted it out of the bilge (2 person job) we dropped the main halyard through the forward companionway and used that to lift it out of the boat with one person guiding it to avoid hitting anything then lowered it to the finger pier. -

ParticipantPretty sure 30 weight, non-detergent. Butâ¦my PO used multi-vis detergent oil for 25 yrs without incident. He replaced the v-drive prior to my tenure with a new Walters unit, due to ârust-throughâ of the case from the salt water cooling circuit.

ModeratorWalter recommends 30 wt non-detergent oil, but you can use Rotella 30wt heavy duty oil. My PO used 90wt gear oil. Made it quiet, though.Bob

ParticipantWe use Lucas Oil HD additive, they say you can use up to 100% for differential gearboxes, we usually keep it at 10 to 15%. it is really very sticky, and I think that has benefits for keeping the Walter gears in good shape. We have also just uncoupled the raw water from going through the unit, and monitoring with a gearbox oil guage.RegardsStephen ParryS.V. Blue Pelican
