I’ve heard/read prices mentioned for the Honda eu2000i portable generator that range from $750 to $1000.
Has anyone price-shopped for the cheapest US source?

      Hi Tor,

I got mine last year from someone like 'Generators R Us' for 850 with shipping.

Let me see if I can find the place.

      Linus and Bob,

Thanks for those source leads. Now that I’ve thought about it, though, my question was premature. I don’t
expect to cast off until next spring, so there’s little point in buying the Honda now and having it sit
idle while the warranty runs out. Granted, they’ll probably cost a little more a year from now, but
there’s always some kind of trade-off, isn’t there?

      Hi Linus

How does one connect the AC output (std two prong home) of the Honda
generator to our cockpit three prong + twist receptacle?

An adapter cord. Also useful for hooking the shore power up when in the yard over the winter.

Chuck, that’s a great pic you sent, but if you enlarge and look carefully, none of them have a straight 2 prong household 120V plug. So after looking for such a thing for many years in the No 1 West Marine store in San Diego, and in number 318 here in NYC, have you Ever SEEN ONE?

      Hi Thatcher,

Marinco makes an adapter, well, actually two. One is male 120V to female 30 amp so that an extension cord can plug into a boat socket and the other is the 30 amp male to 120V female so a regular extension cord can plug into a dockside outlet. I have both – for the generator and sometimes I have to run a power tool on the dock (like a table saw).

You just use a regular old extension cord to the generator and the male to 30amp female on the normal power fitting on the boat and voila! AC.

The attached image is the panel of the eu2000i. It appears to accept both a standard 3 prong 125 volt 20 amp male plug as well as a special cable that allows the two circuits to be combined. Thatcher, are you referring to a two prong cord that has no ground? A pair of dikes will convert a 3 prong to a 2 in an instant… 😉

OK Great. I have been looking for that cord for precisely this application, generator with only 120 V std plug, to boat 30 AMP triple prong twist, and have not seen it anywhere. I will call APS and WM and see what I get. Thanks Bob.

Thatcher, prepare to die from sticker shock too. These adapters have got to be the most ridiculously priced boat object there is.

Here in SoCal we have a great used store called Minney’s, in Seattle there’s Second Wave. If you are forced to buy them retail, you’ll learn to guard them vigorously 🙂

No Chuck, a standard household 3 prong plug is what I am referring to, two blades and a ground. That seems to be what the Honda accepts as a male. For my receptacle on the boat, I need a 30 AMP Male plug to go in. SO, I need and am looking for a two male ended adapter, one for the boat, the other for the Honda. The links I have seen all have one female side.

120 male to 30female to shorepower cord to boat ???

Or you could do it with a 120 cord on the honda end and cut it to length

This seems odd. Someone should make a male for the genset, cause that’s all it accepts, and a male for the boat receptacle. Am I crazy?

Yes, Thatcher, you are crazy. The generator won't connect directly into the boat socket. I know you have an extension cord. All you need now is the $49.00 adapter – female twistlock 30 am to male 120v 15 amp household. Then you're done. What's more, you can put the generator on the cabin top or bow away from you in the cockpit.

FYI, WM is having a sale on power cords that I think starts today.

You can buy a 40’ shorepower cord for $20 off AND get 20% off an adapter.

Sorry I didn’t get back, I was out of touch for the past couple of days. I
have the adapter and I intend to make a short cable from an old shore power
cord with a new end just for the purpose of running the generator. Of
course I’ll wait till after I have a chance to use it a few times to
determine the right length. I just ordered mine today so I can get it right
      before it gets too hot.

I saw what I think is the correct cord at West Marine yesterday here in NY.
They want 74$. It’s a regular household plug on one end, male, and a female
      30 A on the other.

      Hi Thatcher,

They also have an adapter for about $30 less that does the same thing with the addition of a household extension cord. It's female 30amp to male 15amp. Or, you could get a 30 amp female plug from Home Depot for $15, and wire a three wire extension cord to it. Total cost for both: $20 or so. Time to do the job: 1/2 hour, including finding the wire cutters and screwdriver.

The pigtail adapter at West Marine is model # 194423, $64.99. Page 403 of
the 2008 catalog. ( You could make this up, yourself.)
