Por favor, what are the stock hatches? I was under the impression they
might be Bomar 100 series. I need to replace gaskets and several
broken armatures, so any tips are appreciated.

      Hi Adam,

I forget what year your 424 is, but the older ones (1978) use the cast hatches with rather poorly threaded knobs on spindly arms. If that’s what you have, you may have to look in Grainger’s or an auto body supplier for D- type foam weather seals.

If your hatches are extruded and formed ones (newer ones) you can still get parts for them from Bomar.

If you have the old ones, I’d really consider upgrading. I know I will – the new hatches are only about 2 boat-bucks each.

Bob: What makes are you looking at in the way of upgrades? Today is the kind of day that inspires hatch replacement!

      Adam,
For the original Bomar cast aluminum hatches, the Lewmar Ocean hatches are nearly a drop-in replacement. You will have to do a little sanding of the wooden frames below the hatches, but no fiberglass work. I went with the Lemar hatches and they have served me will for over 7 years. When I replaced my hatches Bomar still made the same cast aluminum hatches, but I hate the splindly dogs that take for ever to loosen or tighten. If you don’t get the dogs tightened just right the hatches leak.
Again at the time I was replacing my hatches Bomar had a very good looking extruded aluminum hatch, but (go figure) it was not a drop-in replacement for the old hatches. So Lewmar got my business rather than Bomar.
I haven’t looked at either line of hatches for over 7 years.

      John

      Hi Adam,

What John said. I’m pretty sure Lewmar still has the same hatches. I’ll get to them after I clear off all the new parts on the aft cabin berth.

Pompanette is the distributor of Bomar products. I know because I bought stuff from them.
