Just curious, for the W60, what grade oil is being used. Know that should change for the climate.

      sort of a survey.

Getting ready for first change and 15w 40 is on board for the job.

No longer have the W60, but I believe Westerbecke spec’d 30#, single grade.
When I was in Europe I could not get single grade motor oil (in anything
less than a 55 gal drum) so I switched to 15W40 with no ill effects. I
repowered shortly after returning to the states, so I wasn’t on multi-grade
for more than a few years. The engine was running fine when I repowered.

I’m one of the last w-60s. I use rotella 30# in gallon containers. High quality oil and it goes in the v-drive too (and on the quadrant cables) so I only have to carry one grade.

Interesting…my former Perkins 4-154 had a spec for 30 wt only!  Written in the
Perkins manual. I also used Rotella in one gallon containers. My new Yanmar
      specifies 10-40.

I know there is a scientific explanation…someone told me, but be damned if I
      can remember!

If you have a Westerbeke W60/W58 and a Velvet Drive transmission and the
Walter V-Drive you can use single grade 30wt oil (like Rotella) in all three
units. For the Velvet Drive, you must clean and flush out all the ATF
before switching to oil. I haven’t done that but may consider it in the
      future.

I’ll go with the 15w 40 seems like the cool climate will match up. The engine is run at 1800rpm, on Don’s rec at is about 180-190F on the temp. Seems like the sweet spot. Engine is strong, knock on wood, (plenty of that around here), and hope to get a few more years before the repower.[/url]

      The V-drive specifies ‘non-detergent’ oil.
