OK so I start the repower project and there are more and more things that are jumping up now that the engine and tank have been removed. This is the picture from under the steering pedestal obviously there is a leak that has caused some damage that needs attention before we get going for the summer. I saw that Aaron on RA has done some pedestal repair. And I think I remember that Rich had written about replacing the cables on the pedestal. Has anyone taken the bottom plate off the pedestal? It looks fairly simple and it needs to be cleaned and repainted. Hey in for a penny…. Just thought I’d ask to see if anyone has any advise for this new adventure in simply messing about on boats.

      I didn’t go anywhere near there 🙂

With the engine out I would think it should be pretty straightforward though. The only thing I had trouble with is the screw in the middle of the pedestal that clamps the cables. I could not reach that clamp or realign it to save my life. The new control I installed routes the cables through the pedestal guard, so I ended up just clipping the old cables off.

      Yuk!
My experience with the pedestal has been all bad. Aluminum and stainless don’t like each other. If left in contact with each other, electrolytic corrosion marries the two metals, making it near impossible to remove anything. The right way to do this is to put a stainless insert in the aluminum rather than tap a hole. Most manufactures don’t do this. If you heat a stuck fastener, you can sometimes remove it. Even if the fastener has a stainless nut on a stainless bolt as shown in your photo, you should expect difficulty removing it. When you reassemble, do the next owner a favor and put some goop on the threads.

I paint my pedestal in-place. I’ve run a bead of caulk around the base to keep water out from under it. If you can keep water out of there with caulking, you should be able to do the same.

      Rich,
What paint did you use on your pedestal. Mine is badly in need of re-painting, but I'm waiting on the summer drought before starting that project. I thought I would just use Rust-Oleum primer and paint. Did you find something better?

I just put a coat of 1-part polyurithane over what is there. It lasts a few years.
