ParticipantHas anyone used the BOAT US documentation service? Or is it even worth it? It seems from the information that I could find online that the documentation process is fairly straight forward. Just supply the Coast Guard with the needed forms and the all important fee. Any helpful hints would be appreciated
Thanks
Linus

ParticipantLinus: Lady Leanne is documented. The transfer of ownership just involved sending in an updated form. I just did the annual CG paperwork update through the mail. I think you could probably do all on line as it is a simple process.

ParticipantLinus,
If you already have the boat documented, there is absolutely no need to use a service to update it. Unfortunately the USCG documentation service (in Falling Waters, WV – any wonder Robert Byrd will die in his Senate seat) only deals with snail mail. However all you have to do is mail the form back with any changes to the info and the renewal is free. If you renew late there is a fee. When I initially purchased Sarah I let the finance corp do the documentation. They charged me $75 to change the name of the boat. If there is a lien on the boat (as I had for the first few years) it may be necessary to let the finance corp do the initial documentation (to establish the lien). After that I did it myself directly with the USCG, including getting the lien removed once the loan was fulfilled. On Sat, Dec 19, 2009 at 3:49 PM, kalinowski wrote:

Transfer of ownership requires a title document notarized in the state where executed, cannot be done on line.

ParticipantMy boat was documented as Grace in NY then it was sold to the man that I bought her from. He didn’t transfer the documentation. He registered her with the state. I have the original documentation and the papers that are bundled like he might have been thinking of transferring it. The application that I got from the internet doesn’t ask for any documents just some information from the documents.
I guess that I must just get started and see how the bureaucracy treats me.Thanks
Linus
