ParticipantI’m not sure this is a novel idea or not, I stole it from another 424 owner
(Doug Campbell – Mobjack Pearl).
To get all but the the last few ounces out of the bilge – I installed a
Whale Gulper pump on the decommissioned shower sump that straddles the bile.
The pump is connected by way of a hose to a section of PVC pipe that
terminates at the lowest point of the bilge.
On the end of the PVC pipe I glued a cap that has 4-5 holes drilled thru
it.
After the lowest bilge pump is finished with it’s work and there is still a
fair amount of water in the bilge, I activate the ‘dry bilge’ pump (switch
at Nav station). In a minute or two, the bilge is essentially dry. I used it
all last season and it works great to get the bilge dry and eliminate any
smells the Admiral deems offensive.
Attached is a photo that shows the hose and PVC pipe._______________________________________________

ParticipantYour idea sure beats trying to “shop vac” the remaining water. Do you then pump the water into a shower sump for directing it overboard?

ParticipantThe “dry bilge” pump shares the same overboard as the shower pump… I don’t
have a sump for the shower… it goes directly overboard…Rick

ModeratorReally? The shower sump is above the water line? I guess I could measure
that. Doesn’t water come in when the boat heels? Especially to starboard?Bob

Bob,
The shower pan drain is well below the waterline. I’m sure Rick meant
his shower water is pumped overboard directly from the shower stall
drain rather than thru a sump. I set mine up that way, too, and use the
original sump box beneath the floorboards for storage.Tor

ModeratorThat’s what I thought. Mine’s the same. I removed that box.

ParticipantRick,
I thought you might have a Y-valve on your shower pump that allowed
you to use it as a backup bilge pump. I rigged that for awhile, when
I used a macerator pump for direct overboard discharge of the shower
water. Since that pump would not nomrally clog and didn’t require a
strainer, I used it as a slow, but effective way to dry out the bilge.
Unfortunately, while that pump (Whale) never clogged, it did break
often. The failed parts were never in the repair kit offered by
Whale. When the third of these pumps failed a few years back, I
replaced it with a Jabsco that does require a strainer and gave up on
the bilge drying solution.
FWIW, the overboard discharge for my shower has a vented loop. That
was installed either by Pearson or a PO. So no real worries about
water backing up into the shower pan.Regards,
John Stevenson
