ModeratorFor you cutter owners (and those who added an inner forestay):
Revery?s PO never used her as a cutter and therefore removed the backstays. I see the tangs on the mast but no other evidence of how they were rigged.
Anyone have pics/info on tackle, fairleads, etc.?
Any little bit helps!
Thanks,
Evan

I can’t comment on the running backs because I have a sloop, but I had an issue with the backstay. Did you reinforce the chainplate?Rich

The cutter and sloop versions have a weak chainplate attachment to the transom. The entire transom can and will get pushed in and the bolts will pull out unless you reinforce the attachment. I tried a couple of backing plate fixes but I found that I needed something more substantial. The repair is a bit involved but can be done by anyone who has access to a drill-press. This fixed the problem for me.http://www.richardcarter.net/boat/TransomChainPlate/

ModeratorRich,
I just realized I never replied to you. Sorry about that!
To answer your question: no, not yet. But it’s near the top of my list of critical fixes. I got down behind the quadrant last time I was on the boat to check all of the “stuff” down there and reconnect the linear actuator. The job was made much easier with Ewan handing me wrenches while he drank my beer. Thanks Ewan!
The steering system looked great as did the rudder stuffing box. However, I found several instances of loose hardware (mostly non-critical, but annoying if they fell off). Luckily, I don’t see any signs of the transom buckling but YIKES does that area need beefed up!
I just read through your fix and another that involved layering mat and roving tapered toward the edges. Both seem more than adequate for the job and yours is quite elegant, actually. I’ll have to do some serious thinking on how I want to handle it.
Thanks for chiming in!As for the running backstays, I think I’ve got that noodled out. I was over-complicating it…gotta remember to always KISS!

ParticipantI’ve got a cutter. I can send pictures of running backstays when I’m there Wednesday. Can’t go up the mast because she’s on the hard, but I can shoot the rest.

ModeratorRob,
That would be MOST appreciated, especially how they’re run to the winches (assuming you use the windward primary instead of tackle). Regardless, pics would be great. Thanks! -

ParticipantAh, unfortunately can’t help there. They’re tensioned with a 3:1 pulley system + cam cleat. To adjust them I have to go a few feet ahead of the cockpit on deck.

ModeratorNo worries. If you can get pictures of the setup anyway, I would appreciate it. Debating which way to go on that…
Thanks again.Evan

ParticipantThe runners on my cutter are rigged the same way as Rob’s. From tangs on the mast between the spreaders and masthead to a tackle that attached to a ring slider on the genoa track on the toe rail.

ParticipantI am new to the website but owned my P424 over 23 years. I did belong to the old newsletter years ago. Here is a question for anybody to answer. Is there any easy way to improve the side deck drainage? The 2 scuppers work ok when underway and heeling but DO NOT completely drain the side deck when at the dock. The result is constant water and stains!! -

KeymasterWelcome Robert!
I believe this question has been asked before – the site has a useful search feature for that conversation.
It is up on the right hand side of the home page.
