ParticipantGreetings fellow 424s.
I need a little help. I have this plate (see picture) in the cockpit, starboard side. Does anyone have the same? My hull number is 199 – cutter set up.

Participantpicture?
I’m guessing it’s the fuel gauge peep-hole.1 user thanked author for this post.

KeymasterSounds like the fuel gauge window as Rich mentioned. I’m attempting to upload some photos to see if the site is going to allow it. If you see some photos below, then there is something wrong with your particular image file.

ParticipantIt is a fuel gauge window..
You should see thru it to the top of your fuel tank where they have install a full/half/quarter mechanical fuel gauge mounted in the top of the tank…
I recently removed mine to clean it and discovered that water had seeped into the core of the fiberglass floor around it…I believe it is made of glass mounted in brass..
I have temporarily put a piece of plastic over the hole until the core thoroughly dries before I can fix it.. the Glass cleaned up and is now fairly clear..
Hope that helps…John

ParticipantHi John – i removed mine and did removed some of the core around the hole and used epoxy to seal it.
How did you clean up the glass? mine is crazed and i can’t see through it at all.
I tried unscrewing the back to remove the glass but its wasn’t going to be moved at all. For now I’ve put it back in to be revisited another day.

ParticipantHey Neil, hope your well, have not seen you for a while.
What are you using on Blue P for a fuel gauge….I am trying to get Clint to figure something out.

ParticipantHi Mike – PO had done the same as on the other thread – ie replaced the original gauge with electronic sender and mounted display in easy view from the helm.
Must admit its a bit flaky on the readings so I do need to have a look at connections etc but is still a better solution than the original setup.

ParticipantI removed mine many years ago (sealed the core with epoxy) and replaced it with a generic plastic screw in deck plate. I replaced the sighted fuel gauge with a sender and an electric gauge elsewhere in the cockpit.

ParticipantThe peep-hole was stupid. To view the gauge, I had to pour a bit of water on the deck plate so I could see through it and get on my hands and knees to view the damn thing. I replaced mine with an electric sender and gauge and painted the underside of the plate so you can’t see through it anymore. I have a hard time reading the engine gauges when sitting behind the wheel. It would be nice to read them right at the helm. I installed new instruments this past winter, putting Nav and instrument displays on a binnacle pod. I hooked up a Noland RS-11 gizmo that attaches to the engine senders and sends NMEA-2000 sentences with oil pressure, temperature, tach, and fuel-level. He has a bug in the gizmo however that incorrectly formats the fuel level sentence. I can see the other gauges on my NMEA instruments but the fuel level won’t show until he updates the firmware. I sent him the raw data that shows the problem. So far, no response from Noland. I’ll send out a photo of the installation when I get time. Fuel level shouldn’t be changing often so its not a problem but I want it to work as planned.

Thanks for that…it appears on mine that the plexiglass on top is too crazed to see through. Does anyone have a trick to fix the craze so I can see if the thing even works, or better yet a diagram of what it all looks like below the hole. Trying to figure out a better way for calculating fuel on board.

ParticipantMike,
See attached… one pic is of the fuel gauge face.
And the other is the top of the tank..
As you can see there is about 6 to 9 inches of space there between the top of the tank and bottom of the cockpit floor.. You can also see the light coming thru the cockpit floor in the rear left of the pic and the gauge directly below..
It might be easier just to remove the site glass and see if you can polish it or have another one cut.. It is held in by screws..
Hope this helps..
