We’ve had at least a couple of ‘thrilling’ moments at marinas in each of the
past 2 summers.
I’m reasonably certain a bow thruster is in my future when we haul out this
winter.
In preparation for the October Annapolis Boat Show I’m curious what you
decided to do.
Also Chuck, which Lewmar model did you install and would you pick that same
make/model again?
And Dave, which Vetus model did you install and would you pick that same
make/model again?Rick

Hello, fellow 424 owners,
I’ve been rather absent for quite a while….have over 800 emails to review
on this list. In fact, I’ve not had much chance to attack boat projects,
either, due to family commitments. But one that stays high on the project list is a bow thruster. I know
intuitively that if I practice better techniques, I should be able to
manuveur without one. But I’m on the Mississippi right now, with a current
that normally flows right through our marina, and at times when the wind
combines with the current, it’s next to impossible.I’ve been reluctant to install the conventional thruster, with a tunnel
through the boat, but have recently seen ads for the eXturn by Marrino,
which mounts external. They say that it actually produces less drag than a
conventional tunnel (rather short tube, although it sticks off the bottom of
the bow), and that its design allows flotsum to slide over it. Installation
is much simplified, and due to limited room just aft of the forward water
tank (about the only place you can get to), that space could more easily
accomodate the battery(s) to run it (and perhaps a windlass, another item on
my list).Does anyone have any experience with an eXturn, or advice on thrusters in
general? My wife would like it to be on our Christmas list. Thanks!! Jim

ParticipantRick, I’ll dig up the details on the thruster installation, tube and thruster size. I’m very happy with the Lewmar unit. Can find zincs and props most anywhere.
It has ample power to move the boat. Probably more than enough. Ideally it would be deeper in the boat but the spot between the water tank and the bulkhead is really the only spot to locate it.If you want a quoted price for a full installation or components (tube) give me a call.
