ParticipantJust discovered my inboard sink is draining as fast into the bilge as it is overboard. The drain elbow on that side has cracked – actually it appears to have de-laminated. I'm guessing they are made of fiberglass. A chunk came loose from the outside where the drain hose clamps to it. So there is no way to seal it with more pressure on the hose clamp. Tomorrow I'll take the elbow to Loew's and HD to see what I can replace them with.If anyone has done this and can recommend what they used and where they got it, I would greatly appreciate it. -

ParticipantSounds like they were replaced once before. The original elbows on hull #47 were cheap brass, the same kind you use in a kitchen sink. When they leaked, I replaced them with cheap plastic as a temporary fix about 20 years ago.

ParticipantThey may be brass, I haven't climbed under the sink to get a close look. I'd like a quick fix for now that doesn't require replacing the hoses (that comes later) cause I'd just finished dinner and have a sink full of dishes to clean. -

ParticipantHey John,
Not sure what an “inboard” sink is, or where an “outboard” sink would be. (Overboard, maybe?) Attached is a photo of my now-9-year-old upgrade for the galley sink elbows, PVC pieces with the necessary screw cap fitting that I almost certainly got at Home Depot. Silverheels’ forepeak sink was long ago replaced with deep tool storage for my work bench there. The head sink’s version of an elbow is surely original, brass (or bronze?) seemingly brazed onto the bottom of the sink’s threaded drain tube and bent about 75-degrees towards the thru-hull. Once you’ve cut the brazed brass off the sink drain tube, if you can’t find a matching PVC elbow with the right size screw-on fitting, you might instead just clamp on a length of hose with an I.D. equal to the O.D. of the drain tube. Your sink will then have a nice, wide, smoothly-curved drain to the thru-hull instead of the skinny, bent tube Pearson put on there, which is prone to clogging.
Have fun,
Tor

ParticipantThanks, Tor, the picture helps as I still haven't emptied the area under the sink so I can start work. It reminds me that the last time I replaced the faucet I planned to replace all of the drain fittings, but I didn't want to add more trips to HD for that project. I usually measure the difficulty of a boat repair, not in cost or time, but the number of trips to Loew's, HD, Ace, etc. My goal is to keep that number in single digits, but I seldom achieve that goal. Since I might as well replace the faucet while I'm in there (it is starting fail), this will probably be another double digit project.JohnP.S., the inboard sink is the one on the left in your picture.ð -

ParticipantIt’s not that I don’t enjoy reading these emails, but my inbox is overflowing at the moment. I’ve tried to unsubscribe 3 times and it doesn’t seem to work. Any ideas?

ParticipantPFSChey, this is why I’m not so keen on using the mailing list. Others are comfortable getting every email or comment in their inbox, I’d rather just go to the site at my convenience and then see what’s new. I’m still getting the emails but I might want only to get “new topic” notifications if that’s possible (Ewan?).
You might want to just unsubscribe from the email notifications. But I’m certainly not the guy to ask “how” (Ewan?).

ParticipantâFinished the repair with only 3 trips to Ace Hardware. A new record for me. As Rich and Tor posted, everything needed is standard household plumbing. -

ParticipantHey Bob,
Great shot, but I wonder if 5MB (5300 pixels width) is necessary
to share an image not intended for print publication. It took a
lot of time and broadband to download. Perhaps if we all downsize
our photographs before sharing them, say to around 800 pixels
width, they will still make good viewing, travel a lot faster,
and benefit those in our group who rely on pay-as-you-go
broadband underway.Nice installation!

ParticipantYup, getting WAY too many emails here too. Would love it if the site could make it possible to only receive emails notices of “new subjects” and not all the other correspondence that come after.KenTaking what comes as I get it, using it all as much as I can and trying hard to leave all the shit behind.

ModeratorNot only that, but it won't send the server into a tizzy. Rest assured, I'll do that the next time… -
