SpectatorI see a cutter and a sloop on Yachtworld with what I think looks like a nice anchor platform. Anyone know if these were factory installed? If not, was it something one of you designed?

I had seen several of the, I assume factory installed, anchor platforms that had been bent so I built mine with a support. I got stainless pipe from the local welding shop and had it bent a Midas muffler. It is still a work in progress I would like to add a Ronca hanging with the roller in the platform so both anchors would have room. Here’s a picture. I am about 350 and I can dance on it and it doesn’t move. I hope the anchor load won’t exceed that by much, though I know that it’s possible.

SpectatorIf you properly attach a snubber to your anchor rode and then cleat off on the bow cleat then slack the anchor rode you shouldn’t have ANY significant force on your anchor platform.

Linus,
When did you install the starboard? I am asking this because I too am thinking of using starboard and I was wondering about the effects of UV and longevity issues.

Indulgence
ParticipantI have the same platform on Indulgence….I carry a #45 CQR and 25 HT Danforth. Works great…no issues. Also is a nice diving platform.

Easy Reach came with an anchor sprit and two bow rollers. The rigid (tubular s.s.) bobstay has a short piece at a right angle from the stay anchored to the stem. I use two snubbers–3 fathoms of 5/8 twisted nylon each–secured to the bow cleats and tied to the chain with ??? (one month away from the boat and I’ve forgotten the name) hitches. I had been using an anchor grabber as recommended by Hinz, but discovered that it slowly degraded the galvanizing on the links it was attached to. These varied from anchoring to anchoring, but after years of anchoring out, I could see damage to a few links.

ParticipantI was referring to the load experienced while hauling up the anchor. That is when I assumed the bending had occurred on the other boats.

It’s been two years. I have starboard that is used as a shim on my skiff for the trolling motor that has been there for 6 or 7 years that shows no signs of deteriorating. My new Parker has all the locker doors made of starboard. I don’t see it as a problem and if I have to replace it in 10 years it will be cheaper than the teak, ceatol and time to maintain would add up to. I have three 1 x 1/4″ stainless flat bars welded across under the starboard so it really serves as a shim for the roller bracket. All the bolts go through the stainless.

It does look nice, but…
You may pay more in slip fees, and it doesn’t address the real problem which is the chain binding because it enters the locker at the shallowest point

ModeratorSo thanks to Ewan, I realized Reveryâs platform suffers badly frim crevice corrosion and needs replacing. Itâs now off the boat and I have a couple of guys coming by to quote. Hereâs the question:
Is there any reason NOT to do it in aluminium? Stainless is pretty, but our davits and hard top supports are aluminium with no signs of being insufficient. Thoughts?
