The temp gage on our W 58 has given up the ghost (the gage pegs at 300 when the engine starts). Are these standard screw in units? Suggestions?

I suggest checking with the instrument manufacturer to see which resistance sender you need. This can normally be done online using the instrument number. Then pull the sender and drive on over to the nearest auto-parts store. He can probably match the threads and resistance with a generic automotive sender. Chances are the threads are a standard 3/8 pipe-thread. I don't have a W58, so I'm not sure.

Its good for them but not so good for you. Their asking $76 for a $20 part. Check for a loose connection at the top of the sensor. That would cause the needle to peg if its open. A little PB-blaster on the connection might help.

I've replaced both my oil low pressure switch and sender unit and gauge with standard units from Stewart Warner - go to an autoparts store and get a new unit for $20 or less. I think the original Westerbeke gauges are VDO. That means the senders are also. But they are so standard that you'll have no problem getting a replacement. Even if you have to replace the gauge, it's only another $30. So for all that, it's less than Torrensen.

There were two temp "senders" on my W58. One is for the idiot horn and the other for the temperature gauge. I replaced my gauges with trusty and good looking VDO "cockpit series gauges" and made a new plastic panel. The whole panel with senders and the tach will go up for sale in a few weeks when my new panel comes with the new Beta Marine engine. ( I don't want to leave a big hole in the boat in the meantime... I have a big enough hole in the sole where I am building the new fuel tank. I'll take a picture of it this weekend.

Most likely wiring. Check your connections, especially at the guage.
